Sixth Circuit gives EPA an extra seven months to implement new pesticide rules

A federal appeals court on Monday, March 28, 2011 gave federal and state water regulators more time to comply with a 2009 mandate requiring Clean Water Act (CWA) permits for pesticide discharges into U.S. waters.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati granted the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) request that the deadline for implementing the court’s ruling in National Cotton Council v. EPA be extended from April 9, 2011 to Oct. 31, 2011.

“Extending the compliance deadline does not fix this problem,” Don Parrish, American Farm Bureau Federation Senior Director of Regulatory Relations.  “Requiring permits isn’t the solution either.”

The extension was announced three days before the House of Representatives passed legislation by a bipartisan vote of 292-130 that would prohibit additional regulation of federally-approved pesticides. The bill passed with 235 Republican and 57 Democrat “yes” votes.

“Wyoming Agricultural Literacy Week” the week of March 20th (March 21, 2011)

Recognizing the importance of the Wyoming agriculture industry and educating school children through reading, the week of March 20th has been designated as “Wyoming Agricultural Literacy Week.”  Wyoming Governor Matt Mead made the state proclamation.

Educating Wyoming school children about agriculture is the goal of the Wyoming Farm Bureau Young Farmer and Rancher Committee “Ag Books for Kids” project.   2011 marks the seventh year of the project.  The Wyoming Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmer & Rancher Committee, along with the county Farm Bureaus, donates agriculture books each year to the elementary school libraries across Wyoming.

Agriculture is AMAZING—we have a culture thanks to agriculture – March 11, 2011

Take a moment to think about how far technology has brought us in America.  We can golf, go to movies, take a vacation, drive our kids to soccer games or watch a football game with friends because we don’t have to work day and night to grow our own food thanks to agriculture! If you stop and truly think about this it will fill you with wonder—Agriculture is Amazing!  It is astounding to think that today each United States farmer produces food and fiber for 155 people in the United States and abroad.  Compare that to only 19 people in the year 1940—Agriculture is Amazing!

AFBF Backs Bills to Preempt EPA Greenhouse Gas Regs – March 3, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 3, 2010 – The American Farm Bureau Federation supports legislation introduced today in both the House and the Senate that would preempt regulation of greenhouse gases by the Environmental Protection Agency based on climate change considerations.

The Energy Tax Prevention Act of 2011 was introduced today in the House by Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.). In the Senate, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Environment & Public Works Committee, introduced a companion bill.

You Can Stretch Your Grocery Dollars and Eat Healthy, Too – Feb. 18, 2011

Wyoming Farm Bureau Federation News Release–February 18, 2011

Laramie—Concern about the cost of a healthy diet being out of reach remains on the minds of many Americans as the nation continues to work through serious economic woes. However, according to an Agriculture Department study, the cost of eating healthy hasn’t changed as much as some less-healthy alternatives. Eating healthy food while on a budget does require strategic shopping.
