El Paso Corp. is the company overseeing the Ruby Pipeline proposal for a pipeline from western Wyoming to Oregon. The recent arrangement among El Paso Corp and Western Watersheds Project (WWP) and Oregon Natural Desert Association (ONDA) appears to be pitting one industry against another- Ranching and Pipelines. WWP has the overriding goal of removing livestock grazing from federal lands. The amount paid to WWP and ONDA, $20.0 million, equates to $29,411.76 per mile, or $91.91 per rod. This amount is in addition to what is paid for the easement. This sets a very dangerous precedent, allowing a large company to buy their way from litigation. This type of activity will hurt other industries that cannot afford these large settlements. Read two articles that respond to the El Paso Gas controversy. One article is by Natrona County Rancher Doug Cooper and one article is by the Western Legacy Alliance.
